President's Day Adventures

Since we're big copy cats and want to be just like the Snows, we went to Hains Point yesterday to see the Awakening statue. It's moving on Wed to a new location, so we could squeeze a trip in on Monday. Travis lost his voice, so he wasn't at work and decided to join Erica, me and the kids for the trip.

The statue was really cool to finally see in person, even if we could only see parts of it beneath the swarms of kids. Grant and Blake loved climbing on the poor guy's face and Hayden even got a chance to check it out. We tried for a family picture on the giant hand, but couldn't get rid of the little girl who was already playing on it. She was in about three people's family pictures. haha Cute girl though.

Next up was a drive a few miles away to Ben's Chili Bowl. It's a DC landmark famous for good food and famous people eating good food there. Google maps apparently thought it necessary to drive in circles to get there, so it was an adventure finding it. We told Erica she should hop out and ask a group of scary-looking locals for directions while we locked the doors behind her. Thankfully, we found it soon after and even got a parking spot! The chili was great and we deemed the Half-smoke chili dog the best ever. If you go remember to bring cash and one order of fries is enough for everyone!

Then we headed to Mt. Vernon, did you know it's free on President's day? Everyone else in DC knew it was free and that's why they were all there. Cars and people filled the parking lot and up and down all the side streets around the estate. That coupled with the rain gave us a good reason to skip the whole thing and head home. But it was still a great time and we're looking forward to more sight-seeing with Erica on Saturday.
